Sadie is one of those dogs that you just cant help but to feel sorry for. She has been through so much in her life and it shows. From being a stray and landing herself in a shelter, she made her way to VGSR. From there she went through two homes and ended up in a boarding kennel at a vets office, with nowhere to go. As it would be, the kennel was near me and I couldnt stand knowing we had a dog being boarded due to lack of available foster homes. I was in no position to foster at the time, so I paid a visit to deliver treats and walk Sadie. The second visit ended with me loading her up and bringing her home. Sadie hardly knew me and was terrified to get in my car. She was content with me walking her, but she possibly associated car rides with her ending up in strange places. It didnt take long for Sadie to warm up to me and discover that she liked being wrapped in my arms or sitting comfortably by my side. When we got home we realized Sadie was scared of stairs. One of the former homes she was with could not get her upstairs - so they slept downstairs with her. I coached her up and she latched onto me and quickly learned how to work the stairs! Where I went, she went never wanting to be alone or out of sight. I cant say if Sadie was abused or simply neglected, but she is a very shy and timid dog. Slow to trust, she has lacked stability for probably most of her life. There are only two people she trusts, myself and my dad (who can win over the heart of any GSD). She lowers her head when you reach down to pet her. With others, she will run away when you try and approach her. She is unsure of things, but she is sweet and does not display any aggression. She was once somebodys pet, as she is completely house broken and will not get on the furniture even when you ask her to. Sadie flopped around due to severe separation anxiety. She will require a special, dedicated and patient family. In the previous homes she would destroy crates, breaking free and destroying the house. I decided not to crate her, and I have not seen one sign of destruction in the month she has been with us. She came into a home with a pack of German Shepherds who had an established routine - which apparently works for her. She has access in and outside all day on her own and has taken to a spot under the deck. More and more now, she spends her days hiding under the deck in her safe haven. It is actually very heartbreaking to know that is what her life has come to. She sleeps indoors and happily greets you when you come home, but she feels most comfortable hiding away in her dog-made bunker under the deck. Sadie also is an alpha female. She is fine with dogs who do not pose any aggressive behavior towards other dogs. She stands her ground and will not ignore a dog if they start problems. To be left unattended with another dog, she would do best with submissive dogs. She also would do best in a home that is quiet, and someone is home more often than not. I realize this limits Sadies prospects. Sadie is a beautiful girl and I am very fond of her. You have to earn Sadies love and trust - but, it is totally worth it!
